Threat for light snow returns Wednesday morning

Arctic cold air has once again returns to the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas, but the good news is that this round of cold air will not last too long.  In fact, temperatures begin to moderate by the end of the week with near normal temperatures by next Monday.  Between then and now though, a series of disturbances will keep the threat for snow alive.


For today on through this evening, high pressure will exit towards the Canadian Maritimes leading to increasing clouds through the day.  Winds will be from the west at 5 to 15 mph, veer to the north at 10 to 20 mph.  Temperatures will rise into the upper 20's over the interior and lower to mid 30's along the coast for highs.


A disturbance will dive to the south of New Jersey on Wednesday morning with periods of snow showers.  Only minor snowfall accumulations are expected with most locations around a dusting to an inch of snow.  A few locations may top out at two inches before the snowfall ends, especially over southern New Jersey.  The arctic disturbance will bring another shot of cold air with temperatures ranging from the upper 10's to lower 20's for lows and mid 20's to lower 30's for highs.


High pressure will move across the northern Mid Atlantic tomorrow night on through Saturday with scattered cloud cover and slowly moderating temperatures.  Winds will back to the west and southwest at 5 to 15 mph through the forecast period.  Temperatures on Thursday will range from the single digits to lower 10's for lows and upper 20's to lower 30's for highs.  On Friday, temperatures will range from the single digits to lower 10's for lows and lower to mid 20's for highs.  On Saturday, temperatures will range from the mid 10's for lows and lower to mid 30's for highs.


Another disturbance will bring the threat for scattered snow showers on Sunday with only minor snowfall accumulations expected.  A warm front will follow with a period of moderate to heavy snowfall in the morning, changing over to sleet and then rain as the warm air invades.  Temperatures on Sunday will range from the mid 20's for lows and mid 30's for highs.  Temperatures on Monday will range from the upper 20's for lows and upper 30's to mid 40's for highs.
