Tranquil conditions to end the week

Tranquil weather conditions will end this week with temperatures returning to more seasonable levels.  However, unsettled conditions will return for the weekend with the roller coaster ride of temperatures continuing.  A major coastal storm is possible by next week with the brunt of the impacts expected over New England.

High pressure will be in control today with scattered cloud cover.  Winds will be from the west at 10 to 20 mph.  Temperatures will rise into the mid to upper 40's over the interior and lower to mid 50's along the coast and in urban locations.

A series of weakening cold fronts will move through the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas tomorrow and Sunday with isolated to widely scattered showers.  Most locations can expect scattered to broken cloud cover though.  Winds will veer from the southwest to northwest at 10 to 20 mph.  Temperatures on Saturday will range from the mid to upper 30's for lows and upper 50's to mid 60's for highs.  Temperatures on Sunday will range from the lower to mid 30's for lows and lower to mid 40's for highs.

High pressure will be in control on Monday with clear skies and very chilly weather conditions. Winds will veer from the northwest to northeast at 10 to 20 mph.  Temperatures will be well below normal with lows in the mid to upper 20's and highs in the mid to upper 30's.

A powerful area of low pressure will develop well off the Mid Atlantic coast and track towards the Gulf of Maine by Wednesday evening.  This storm track, although still uncertain, would focus the brunt of the storm impacts like heavy rain and snow over eastern New England.  Still, rain and snow showers will be a threat through the period for the entire region with the majority of the precipitation over Connecticut and Long Island, New York.  Winds will be strong from the northeast backing to the northwest at 15 to 30 mph, increasing to 20 to 40 mph by Wednesday morning.  Coastal flooding will be a significant concern with this storm along with beach erosion, even if the brunt of the precipitation remains well east of the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas.  Temperatures on Tuesday will range from the lower to mid 20's for lows and lower to mid 40's for highs.  Temperatures on Wednesday will range from the upper 20's to lower 30's for lows and lower to mid 40's for highs.
