Freehold Township Little League Coach Dies at 78

Services for Robert A. McNamara were held on Sunday, April 7.

Robert A. McNamara, 78, of Freehold Township, died at home surrounded by his family.

McNamara was born in Jersey City and had resided in Freehold Township since 1966. He was a graduate of St. Peter's Preparatory School, Class of 1951 and St. Peter's College, Class of 1955.

McNamara served in the U. S. Army from 1956 to 1958 and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant after being stationed at the Army Signal Corps School at Fort Monmouth. He was Manager of Corporate Properties for PSE&G where he was employed for over 36 years before his retirement in 1993. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Colts Neck where he was a CCD teacher and Eucharistic Minister.

McNamara was also a coach in the Freehold Township Little League, active in Boys Scouts and Indian Guides and a member of the St. John Vianney Parents' Club. He was a member of the St. Peter's Preparatory School Alumni Association Board of Directors and a member of the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities.

He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Mae Rose McNamara; two brothers, William and Vincent McNamara; and his parents, William and Mary McNamara. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Mary Joan Carey McNamara; his children, Marybeth Connelly and husband Frank, Missy Quinn and Joe Gallagher, Robert McNamara and wife Elaine, Michael McNamara and wife Carolyn, Joan McNamara and husband Patrick Bohen, Maura Holtz and husband Jeff, and James McNamara and wife, Nancy; a sister, Mary Gibney; his grandchildren, Kevin, Caitlin and husband Stefan, Michael, Colleen, Patrick, Meghan, Katie, Erin, Robert, John, Claire, Patrick, Charlotte, Ella, Maggie, Conor, Reilly, Jimmy, MaryKate, and Molly; a great-grandson, Grady; a sister-in-law, Peggy McNamara; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours for McNamara were held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 7 at the Higgins Memorial Home. The Funeral Liturgy was celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 8 at St. Rose of Lima Church.

Interment was held at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown. Memorial donations to St. Peter's Preparatory School, 144 Grand St., Jersey City, NJ 07302 or VNA of Central Jersey Hospice Program, 176 Riverside Ave., Red Bank, NJ 07701 would be appreciated.
