Obituary: Otto Bauer, 86, of Freehold

A WWII veteran who was married 67 years and lived to know his 16 great-grandchildren.

Otto F. Bauer, 86, of Freehold Township passed away peacefully on Friday, April 4, 2014 at The Manor, Freehold Township surrounded by his family. 

Otto was born in Vienna, Austria and had lived in Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal, Pauling, NY, Ridgewood, NJ, New York City, and Bergenfield, NJ before moving to Freehold Township in 1966.

He was a U.S. Army veteran during World War II serving in the occupation of Japan.  

Otto retired as a commodities trader at Louis & Pete, NYC, where he traded Led, Zinc, and Uranium.  Prior to that, he worked at Intsel and C. Tennent both of NYC.

In retirement, along with his wife, Otto was a real-estate broker at Coldwell Banker for twelve years until officially retiring in 2002.  

He was a graduate of the City College of New York and attended Columbia University. 

Otto was predeceased by a son, Richard Bauer; a grandson, Christopher Shellhamer; a daughter-in-law, Mary Bauer; a son-in-law, James Scambos; and a sister, Stephanie Bauer.  

He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Florence Bauer; three sons, John Bauer of Long Branch, Steve Bauer and his wife, Maureen of Freehold and Robert Bauer and his wife, Robin of Ocean Township; four daughters, Kathie Bauer of Williamsport, PA, Deborah English and her husband, John of Freehold Township, Patricia Bauer Scambos Knight and her husband, Rick of Leesburg, VA and Victoria Carrier and her husband, Michael of Jackson; thirty-one grandchildren, Jason Webster and his wife, Jennifer, James Bauer and his wife, Jesenia, Sara Bauer, Rachel Davidson and her husband, Josh, Michael Bauer, Kelly Bauer, Jeffrey Bauer, Emily Bauer, Kevin Bauer, Brian Bauer, John English and his wife, Kaycee, Kristen English, Meghan Barbato and her husband, Anthony, Kathleen English, Timothy English, Lauren English, Jessica English, Brian English, Deborah English, Paul Scambos and his wife, Kristen, Stephanie Scambos, Cynthia Scambos, Meagan Hawkins and her husband, John, Caitlin Knight, Sam Knight,  Jennifer Bower, Michael Carrier, Lauren Rose McKnight and her husband, Kevin, Tayler Carrier, Dale Carrier and Hailey Carrier; sixteen great grandchildren; and two sisters, Poldi Peutl of Paramus and Rose Lupo of Paramus.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Mass at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 16 McLean Street, Freehold on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 10:00 AM. Inurnment will be at the convenience of the family in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold. The arrangements are under the direction of the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township.
