New Year's Eve Style Guide

Style tips for ringing in the New Year.

It seems like the presents are hardly unwrapped and it’s already on to the next holiday with nary a moment to waste! 2011 is at its end, which means celebrating in style. This is the perfect time to go absolutely all-out, and I have some tips for getting funky this New Year’s Eve.

All That Glitters. New Year’s Eve was made for glitter. Break out the sequins, break out the glitter, break out the sparkle. You should aspire to make the Times Square ball look dull. Too much is never enough! Luckily just about every store is on-board this trend, so you’ll have no trouble finding it.

Gilt-y as Charged. As the snowman in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer says, "everyone wishes for silver and gold." Metallics are like the classy older sibling to glitter. Outfit yourself in silver, gold, bronze, gunmetal, or some combination for a sleek and fancy effect. Try , Express, and The Limited for more refined pieces.

Jewel Tones. If your New Year’s style craves a pop of color, the shades to wear right now are deep, rich jewel tones like emerald green, ruby red, and sapphire blue. Since it’s New Year’s, you could also pull off some neon, but why not keep the holiday vibe going into 2012?

Tuxedo Styling. Right now I’m loving aspects of tuxedo dressing for both genders. A crisp white top and a bow tie: how could you go wrong? It’s classic on a man and innovative on a woman. There are also great tuxedo-style blazers, like this one from Charlotte Russe. And for the truly daring, go all the way with a miniature top hat hair accessory!

Bold Accessories. Feel like wearing a necklace that rivals the Heart of the Ocean? Do it. Always wanted to wear an ascot? Go for it. 6-inch platform heels? If you can walk in them, or have a purse big enough to bring emergency flats, power to you! New Year’s and Halloween are the two holidays where you can get away with wearing pretty much anything. The spirit of the day is jubilance, so if you wear it confidently you will not fail.

Home Sweet Homey. Finally, for those eschewing the loud and the crowd, I say embrace the anti-NYE party in a Snuggie (at the As Seen on TV store) or Pajama Jeans (at Essentials)!

Bring in the New Year with panache, and party hardy!
