Strong National Gun Laws are GOOD for NJ

Strengthen U.S. gun lawsGun reform activists in New Jersey seeking expansion of the national background check system are often met with incredulous responses from gun rights proponents. They resist federal legislation that would expand background checks and challenge gun reform efforts with statements such as, “New Jersey already has background checks.”They have confused state and federal law. Proposed federal legislation would not increase any New Jersey requirements for gun permits and purchasing.Second Amendment proponents fail to acknowledge that many guns coming into New Jersey from states with lax laws are used in crimes. More than 75 percent are purchased in other states. Thus, other states’ lax laws and a loophole-ridden national background check system are directly affecting New Jersey, in spite of our gun laws. Congress can do more to help keep guns out of the wrong hands. The six House representatives from New Jersey who have not yet supported House background check legislation (Reps. Frank LoBiondo, Jon Runyan, Chris Smith, Scott Garrett, Leonard Lance and Rodney Frelinghuysen) should not let themselves be convinced by the gun lobby’s errant arguments that the legislation impedes New Jersey’s gun owners. It does not.Mandi Perlmutter and Kristin Wald, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in AmericaCONTACT CONGRESSMAN  CHRIS SMITH - DISTRICT 4 , TELL HIM TO SUPPORT COMMON SENSE LAWS THAT KEEP NJ SAFE202-225-3765
