One driver was seriously injured and two more were transported to a local hospital following a crash on Herbertsville Road Thursday afternoon.
Ptl. Scott Brooks of the Howell Police Department reported that a little before 3 p.m. 18-year-old Farmingdale resident Jeffrey Smith was driving a 1997 Toyota Corolla south on Herbertsville Road when he unexplainably crossed the center line near the Circle A Horse Farm.
After crossing the road, Smith collided with a 2001 Honda driven by 74-year-old Nicholas Spinelli of Freehold. Also in the car was Spinelli's wife Concetta.
Brooks said following the crash Smith was trapped in his car and sustained "serious head injuries." He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center after being removed by members of the Ramtown and Squankum Fire Departments.
The Spinellis were taken to the same hospital by the Howell First Aid Squad with what Brooks described as "non life threatening injuries."
The crash is being investigated by Brooks and Ptl. William Bommer Jr. as well as the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the Serious Crash Analysis Response Team.
Ptl. Brooks said no summonses had been issued at this time.
