Here is the text of the alert, which was sent at 6:30 p.m. to residents who subscribe to the Freehold Township OEM's account at nixle.com:

The brunt of Hurricane Sandy is quickly approaching the area. Power outages have been reported throughout Freehold Township and the surrounding area. Several roads are blocked with downed trees and wires.

Remember to treat all downed wires as live and extremely dangerous. As the storm intensifies, emergency services will be less likely to be able to respond. All personal safety precautions should be completed.

All travel should be avoided until the storm passes. Due to power failures along Route 9, many intersections are not passable and you cannot cross the highway. Many secondary roads are impassable.

All transportation to county shelters has been suspended.
