Inmate Who Attempted Suicide No Longer in Custody

A male inmate who attempted suicide at Monmouth County Correction Institution in Freehold last Friday is no longer in custody of the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, according to Cynthia Scott, a spokesperson for the agency.

Scott said the Sheriff’s Office could not comment on the nature of the attempt or how it was discovered. The inmate survived and had been transported by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, she said.

There have been seven suicide attempts at the jail since 2008 and one suicide in 2011, according to Scott.

Inmates at the Monmouth County Correction Institution have access to psychiatrists and psychologists through the jail’s mental health unit, she said.
