Middletown Man Accused of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer

Patrolman Frank Mazza suffered stab wounds during Wednesday's incident.

A Middletown police officer suffered stab wounds after responding to a report of a drug overdose on Suffolk Lane Wednesday morning.

Deputy Chief R. Craig Weber said Patrolman Frank Mazza was injured while he and other officers attempted to subdue 24-year-old Scott H. Knudsen, of Suffolk Lane, early Wednesday morning.

Mazza, Patrolman Lawrence Seymour, Patrolman Savvas Roumeliotis and Patrolwoman Larisa Doriety responded to a report of a drug overdose at the Suffolk Lane home at 4 a.m. When officers arrived at the home, they found Knudsen armed with a knife, Weber said.

Knudsen became combative and attacked the officers, according to Weber. He allegedly tried to stab officers as they placed him under arrest. Mazzza sustained stab wounds during the incident. He and Knudsen were treated at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank and released.

Knudsen was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault on a police officer and weapons possession charges. His bail was set at $510,000 with no option to post 10 percent of the bond.

Reading comprehension is your friend Cali. He said HE "would have shot him." I'm sure many would have. But again, NO ONE said "he should have been shot."

semantics... would have/could have/should of... how many folks end up dead because police have the right to assess a situation and make a quick decision?? Sad, but true, NJarhead... I praise the police in this case for not shooting him... all because he overdosed on drugs... with a knife.... I am sadden the policeman was injured in the line of duty... It takes special folks to become cops and somehow not use their power to inflict pain/death without justification... Just my opinion.... sorry for adding 'drama' ...
