Police Nab Freehold Man in Connection With Manchester Burglary

A witness called 911 after observing suspicious activity at a Manchester home.

A resident's timely call to Manchester police helped authorities nab two men who broke into a home.

Police arrested Michael Deangelis, of Howell, and Phillip Deangelis, of Freehold, Monday after a 911 call led them to the 700 block of Champlain Street. Michael Deangelis stands accused of trying to enter the home, while Phillip served as his getaway driver, police said.

The 911 call at 1:54 p.m. reported the arrival of the two men in a red Honda. The passenger, later identified as Michael Deangelis, got out and was reportedly seen climbing into the home via a rear window. The driver, later identified as Phillip Deangelis, drove off, police said.

Patrolman John Decker arrived on scene to witness Michael Deangelis walking along the fence-line of the home. Decker ordered him to stop, police said, but the alleged burglar ran before Decker apprehended him.

Michael Deangelis had rubber gloves and burglary tools as well as jewelry he allegedly stole from the home, police said.

Both men were charged with burglary, theft, possession of burglar's tools and criminal mischief. Michael Deangelis was additionally charged with resisting arrest and obstructing the administration of law.

Both men are lodged in Ocean County Jail in lieu of $35,000 bail each.

Detectives Chris Hemhauser and Joseph Hankins and Ocean County authorities assisted in the investigation. Anyone with any information about the arrested pair or red Honda are urged to call Hemhauser at 732-657-2009, ext. 4207.
