Possible Capture of Suspect in Cop Death Came Up Empty

Police in West Caldwell held a man at gunpoint until they determined he was innocent

Police in West Caldwell held a man at gunpoint Saturday who they thought was a suspect in the Lakewood police shooting.

But the police came up empty.

An off-duty NJ State Trooper believed he saw the suspect in the Lakewood police shooting at a Shell gas station in West Caldwell.

Shortly after 11 a.m., the station was quickly surrounded by State Police and local police who kept the man held at gunpoint until his identity was checked.

"Upon further investigation, it was determined the man was not the suspect involved in the shooting," said West Caldwell Police Chief Michael Bramhall.

The man was eventually released and the scene cleared.
