UPDATE: One Dead Following Four Car Crash on Rt. 9

The intersection of Rt. 9 and Elton Adelphia Road was shut down following a fatal crash between four cars.

This story was updated at 6:15 p.m. with information from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.

At 11:18 a.m. a Freehold man's car left the southbound lane of Rt. 9 near the Park Nine Diner and veered into oncoming traffic, according to Charles Webster, Public Information Officer of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.

Foreman Barkalow, 73, of James Street was driving his Ford station wagon when for unknown reasons his car crossed the median and collided head-on with a Nissan Rogue SUV. Following the initial crash between Barkalow and the SUV, a Honda Civic and a Mazda 6 collided with the Rogue.

A Freehold Township Police dispatcher confirmed that the intersection of Route 9 and Elton Adelphia Road in Freehold Township was shut down after the crash. A post off of the Monmouth County Police, Fire & EMS Facebook page, stated that emergency services reported to the scene of a multivehicle crash at the intersection. At 3:30 p.m. the group Facebook page posted that the intersection had been reopened.

According to Webster, Barkalow was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 11:52 a.m. Barkalow's cause of death is pending autopsy.

There were no passeners in any of the other vehicles involved in the crash. All three drivers were transported to a local hospital for precautionary measure, they have all since been released.

Unfortunately, not yet. I have placed calls to the Freehold Township Police Department and am now just waiting to be called back. Google Maps makes it look like the intersection is back open, but I am still waiting on confirmation. Hoping to have an update soon.

Intersection is still closed and all Northern traffic is being diverted on Elton Adelphia Rd. There are 8 vehicles involved and a fatality in at least one as per the APP and visual at the accident showed one vehicle with a sheet over the driver door and window which is common when there is a fatality.

Can cross over Route 9, but not go north pass the intersection, cars being diverted.

Yes I saw tow trucks removing vechicles when I first came upon the scene around 12:20pm. There were still 4-6 when I drove back past on my way home around 2pm

Another update from APP said it was in fact 4 cars in the accident. I guess all the other cars scattered around were first responders.

I passed this accident today and what a horrible scene it was. I feel sorry for the man's passing, but my feeling was it was going to be worse. I am pleased to know that all other involved are ok. Please post any news if you hear anything about the cause of the driver who passed that crossed over the median. I feel bad that a life was lost, but thank god not more were seriously injured or lost. It stays with you fir a while when you see a car accident of such great magnitude.
