Teen Struck by Car, Injured in Brick

Speed not thought to be a factor, police say

A 16-year-old Brick boy was struck by a car and injured Monday night, police said.

The teen, whose name was withheld by police due to his age, was attempting to cross Hooper Avenue in the area of Atrium Drive toward the Red Lion Plaza when he was struck by a 2011 Honda Insight being driven by Theresa Huizing, 52, of Brick, said Brick Police Sgt. David Bedrosian.

The accident occurred at 5:36 p.m.

The boy, who was wearing dark clothing at the time of the accident, was struck about 15 feet north of Atrium Drive. He was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, where he remains hospitalized. He is being treated for head trauma, a broken left leg and internal injuries, according to a police report.

Police say speed does not appear to have been a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Detective Robert Shepherd and Officer James Kelly were the initial officers on scene, followed by additional officers, Brick Police EMS and MONOC paramedics, plus the Ocean County Sheriff's Department Criminalistics Investigation Unit.

Hooper Avenue, between Drum Point Road and Old Silverton Road, was closed for about two hours due to the investigation, Bedrosian said.

Bedrosian and Officer Scott Dierking of the Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit responded and are conducting the crash investigation.

OMG...lol. What is wrong with all of you? I'm not taking sides here. But, John isn't bashing this kid at all. RK, you wish this would happen to him? Are you human? Krsyten, he's not insulting this kid or is he blaming him. Why are you bashing him?And he didn't insult you directly, until you insulted him. He was merely stating that this post got side tracked from a kid crossing the street (or jaywalking), and getting hit (which is horrible, no matter the reason), to a discussion about cars speeding, CVS, Red Lion, your lawn, etc.... He's just stating that speed wasn't a factor and to stop mentioning it regarding this accident. I'm sorry, but your behavior is actually worse than the things you are misunderstanding "John" saying. You are all turning this into a witch hunt. Put your focus where it needs to go and read the details of this story before you use this story as a "soapbox" for you to vent the many things wrong in this town. Pedestrians ALWAYS have to the right of way, no matter where they are in the street, at the corner or not (although, you can be fined if you do not cross at the light...not sure if that law is enforced here or not, or if it even is a law in this town, so don't start on me, too). But, pedistrians also have to realize tht even if they do have the right of way, "cars can kill us, we can't kill them." Something I teach my children every day.

Also, I pray for this boy and hs family, nothing is as devastating as watching your child in pain. I also pray for the person who struck him. "There but for the grace of God, go I..." Can't even begin to imagine the pain that any of these people and their families are going through.
