Woman Accused of Trying to Smuggle Drugs, Phone Into Jail

Stephanie Torrez faces multiple charges after allegedly trying to bring marijuana and a cell phone to an inmate.

An Asbury Park woman is accused of trying to smuggle marijuana and a cell phone into Monmouth County Correction Institution (MCCI) on Thursday.

According to a Freehold Township arrest warrant, Stephanie Torrez, 26, allegedly brought the marijuana and phone to the jail with the intent of passing them onto , a 35-year-old Long Branch man incarcerated at MCCI.

Torrez is accused of wrapping the cell phone in duct tape and concealing the phone on her person when she was admitted to the jail, according to the arrest warrant.

Torrez faces charges of attempting to distribute a controlled dangerous substance, conspiring to distribute a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, possession of controlled dangerous substance, attempting to provide a cell phone to an inmate, and conspiring to provide a cell phone to an inmate.

Her bail was set at $71,000 with no 10 percent option.
