Would-be Jail Escapee Indicted on Flee Attempt Charge

A Freehold man tried to escape from Monmouth County jail but catches indictment instead, prosecutor says.

Jeffrey Phillips likely won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. But it’s not for lack of trying.

Phillips was indicted by a Monmouth County grand jury this week on charges he tried to escape from the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township, earlier this year.

Phillips, 27, of Freehold, is charged with a single count of attempted escape for the Feb. 7 incident.

Phillips was jailed on charges of threatening to kill someone and attempting to cause bodily injury to another -- both stemming from an incident in Freehold Borough – on Feb. 4, according to jail records.

It didn’t work.

He was still jailed by afternoon Friday. Bail is set at $25,000, jail records say.
