Bill Madden, Judi Guy Honored for Service to Freehold Borough

The John G. McGackin Award selection committee named recipients for 2010 and 2011.

Jack McGackin wanted to be remembered as the man who was mayor during the beginning of Freehold Borough renaissance, Councilman Kevin Kane said. McGackin was elected mayor in 1983 and served until his sudden death in 1985. The annual John G. McGackin Award named in his honor recognizes the contributions a Freehold Borough resident makes to the community.

During the Freehold Borough Council meeting on Monday, Sept. 19, Bill Madden and Judi Guy were named the recipients of the award. Two individuals were selected since the award was not given out last year.

“This is a tremendous award. The past winners get together, nominate a person, and decide who will be the recipient for the next year,” Kane said.

Madden received the 2011 John G. McGackin Award for his work with the Freehold First Aid and Emergency Squad.  Madden, a trustee with the volunteer organization, has served the squad for over 60 years and coordinates its fundraising efforts. Madden has also served on the Freehold Borough Board of Health for 25 years.

“Bill Madden is Mr. Freehold, Mr. Freehold First Aid. If I want to know anything about Freehold, I call Bill,” said Jim McAllister, treasurer of the Freehold First Aid and Emergency Squad.

During his acceptance, Madden took the opportunity to encourage residents to donate to the squad. National and local economic woes resulted in a disappointing fundraising drive in June, he said.

“We’re in trouble. It was one of our worst financial drives we’ve had. We’re just not getting the support we need,” Madden said.

The 2010 John G. McGackin Award went to Guy, who serves on the Olde Freehold Day and the Spooktacular committees. She was also the former chairperson of the Freehold Borough Recreation Commission.

“Somebody once said busy people make things happen. They have a thousand things going on but they still find the time to help and get things done. Judi Guy is one of those. She’s been associated with I can’t tell you how many different committees for 40 years,” Kane said.

Mayor Michael Wilson praised the John G. McGackin Award selection committee for choosing Madden and Guy.

“I can’t think of two more deserving recipients than Bill Madden and Judi Guy. You talk about public service, you two are the epitome,” Wilson said.
