Freehold Borough Loses Post Office

Trailer will close Friday, July 29.

The United State Postal Service (USPS) will close the Lafayette Place postal trailer in Freehold Borough, according to the USPS Southern Jersey District office. The trailer will close at the end of the business day on Friday, July 29.

The trailer was established as a temporary measure to provide service to the area after a contract postal unit unexpectedly closed, said Raymond Daiutolo with the USPS Southern Jersey District office.

Freehold Borough and Freehold Township officials have long been fighting moves by the USPS to shut down the post office.

At a Freehold Township Committee meeting earlier this month, Committeewoman and former Monmouth County Freeholder Barbara McMorrow noted the loss of the Freehold Borough post office would make Monmouth the only county in the state without a post office in its county seat.

However, USPS officials say the move was necessary because of the decline in people using mail service.

“Given the extraordinary decline in mail volume — a decline of nearly 26 billion pieces last year alone — we must take action to reduce the size of our retail and delivery network,” South Jersey District Manager Joshua D. Colin said.

Local mail delivery will ne be impacted by the closure, according to Colin.
