Freehold High School Students Chat with Senator

Sen. Jen Beck shared her experience and the role of education in her own life.

Sophomores enrolled in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (“AVID”) program at Freehold High School had the opportunity to chat with Senator Jennifer Beck on Friday, March 9.

AVID is a college readiness program that is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance. The AVID system accelerates student learning, uses research based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional development, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change.

“AVID programs are in place in over 4500 sites across the world, it is a global movement that has helped countless students excel,” explained Beck. “These are the kids who just need a little encouragement to be truly outstanding students.”

Since 1990, more than 110,000 AVID students have graduated from high school and planned to attend college. Of the 27,891 AVID graduates in 2011, 91% plan to attend a postsecondary institution; 58% in four-year institutions and 33% in two-year institutions.

“We are living in a truly global marketplace,” said Beck. “Our students need to be as educated and skilled as possible to complete with their international counterparts. If a student wants to go to college, they should never be denied that opportunity. AVID is help making college a reality for thousands of students every year.”
