Freehold Township Consumer Bowl Team Wins 2012 Regional Competition

The high school students will now defend their 2011 New Jersey Consumer Bowl Champion title in Trenton next month.

A team of students brought home another Central Regional Consumer Bowl title from a competition on April 18 at the .

“The Consumer Bowl was established to increase young people’s awareness of consumer issues so they will be smarter consumers when they get out of school,” said Annmarie Howley, director of the Department of Consumer Affairs. “These teens did a fantastic job.”

Members of the Freehold Township High School team include captain Casey Moore, Samantha Fitzgerald, Samantha Sanchez, Morgan Thompson and Jahred Liddie. The team is guided by their adviser is Adam Falk.

Freehold Township clinched the win during the final round against Linden High School of Union County. Other teams in the regional competition included Voorhees High School (Hunterdon County), West Windsor-Plainsboro High School (Mercer County), North Brunswick High School (Middlesex County), Monsignor Donovan High School (Ocean County), and Somerville High School (Somerset County).

To advance to this level of competition, the team won the back in March.

Established in 1997, the goal of New Jersey High School Consumer Bowl is to help students learn about consumer issues that will benefit them throughout their lives. 

The teams advance through three levels (County, Regional and State) of a game-show format competition. The teams earn points by answering questions in a multiple choice and open-ended format. All of the questions were related to consumer issues such as credit and identity theft, banking and fraud and advertising.

“The Consumer Bowl was established to increase young people’s awareness of consumer issues so they will be smarter consumers when they get out of school,” said Annmarie Howley, director of the Department of Consumer Affairs. “These teens did a fantastic job.”

The Freehold Township team will now go on to defend their title of New Jersey State Consumer Bowl Champions, which they won last year. The finals will be held in Trenton next month.
