Homeowners Granted Another Six Months To File Additional Sandy Claims

New deadline for further damage claims is now April 28, 2014

National Flood Insurance Program officials have given residents whose homes were battered by Superstorm Sandy another six months to file more claims.

The deadline extends to homeowners who received initial payments based on adjusters' reports, but now believe they have further damage. Supporting documentation must be supplied to open an additional claim, according to the NFIP.

The Christie Administration today applauded the announcement.

“This is good news for New Jerseyans who are still in the process of settling their flood insurance claims related to Superstorm Sandy,” Christie said in a statement. “My administration has been in contact with the NFIP to discuss the need for this extension and I am gratified that they listened and understood our concerns."

The NFIP last November extended the deadline from 60 days following the date of loss to one year from when Sandy struck. The new extension moves the deadline to April 28, 2014.

Policyholders must provide a proof of loss form to support the amount they are claiming. The form must be signed, sworn and submitted to the insurance company with supporting documentation.

"If homeowners come across additional damage from Sandy’s flood waters that may have initially gone undetected, they are eligible to file a supplemental flood insurance claim," according to Christie's office. "Before this extension, any supplemental claims would have to be filed by Oct. 29, 2013."

“This unprecedented storm has taken a tremendous toll on those New Jerseyans trying to rebuild and recover,” said New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance Commissioner Ken Kobylowski. “The NFIP’s decision to extend their proof of loss filing deadline reflects the reality that New Jersey residents are still working hard and struggling to get all the information they need for filing a complete flood claim.”
