Mayor Nolan Higgins Sworn In

Mayor Nolan Higgins was officially sworn into office yesterday along with reelected Councilman George Schnurr and Councilman Michael DiBenedetto.

The New Year was kicked off with one major change yesterday. At the , Mayor Nolan Higgins took his place in Mayor Michael Wilson’s former chair and was sworn into office following Wilson’s retirement after 26 years as Borough Mayor.

The packed board room was filled with community members, volunteers, and newly elected board members. In the front row, four former borough mayors, watched Higgins take his place among the borough council members. 

“I would like to acknowledge members of the public that are with us this afternoon,” said Higgins. “It is my honor to introduce Mayor John Dawes, Mayor William Doyle, Mayor Roger Kane and I guess I am the first to say, former Mayor Michael Wilson.”

Higgins took a moment to recognize Wilson by saying, “It is never an easy task to follow a popular and successful figure. Mayor Wilson, this mayor and council will work to carry on tradition of excellence and public service.”

In addition to Higgins being sworn in, Councilman George Schnurr and Councilman Michael DiBenedetto also took the oath of office as they were sworn into office again for three year terms. Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer was also announced as the new borough council president.

The new council will meet together for the first time at the Feb. 7, council meeting.
