Newman: Republicans Won't Field Mayoral Candidate

Freehold Borough Republicans won't challenge Democratic candidate J. Nolan Higgins.

Freehold Borough Republicans will not challenge Democratic mayoral candidate J. Nolan Higgins, Councilman John Newman confirmed. Newman is the only Republican on the governing body.

Freehold Borough Democrats announced Higgins as a candidate last week. Higgins is the owner of Higgins Memorial Home in Freehold, a business established by his father in 1955. He is a former Freehold Borough Fire Department chief and has previously served as chairman of the Freehold Borough Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Higgins will run on a slate with incumbent councilmen Michael DiBenedetto and George Schnurr. DiBenedetto, Schnurr, and Councilman Kevin A. Kane had previously expressed interest in seeking the mayoral candidacy following Mayor Michael Wilson's announcement that he would not run for re-election after 31 years on the Borough Council.
