No Left Turn from 17th Ave. If Measure Passes

Township Committee mull ordinance that would make left turn illegal

Make a left onto southbound Route 35 from westbound 17th Avenue and you could face a ticket for an illegal turn if an ordinance being considered by the Township Committee is passed next month.

The measure, which would make illegal a left turn from the busy, unsignaled intersection, was introduced by the committee Wednesday. The vote was unanimous. Committeewoman AnnMarie Conte was absent.

A public hearing on the local law is scheduled for Sept. 12.

Committee members, who do not discuss ordinances on its first reading, have previously said in workshop meetings that the intersection is dangerous and that the police reported a number of accidents or near accidents.

While 17th Avenue is a township road and the committee has the authority to regulate it, the same does not go for Route 35, which is a state road.

But the committee also unanimously supported by resolution a move by the state Department of Transportation that would also close off southbound Route 35 to left turns onto eastbound 17th Avenue.

A division of the DOT is recommending making illegal that left turn, according to the resolution. There was no word late Wednesday on when the DOT would officially make that turn illegal.

In a related traffic matter, the Township Committee, also unanimously, passed a resolution supporting another DOT measure that would make Route 71 in the area of 18th Avenue a "no passing zone.''

The DOT is taking an inventory of its centerline markings along the state highway and is recommending the change, according to the resolution.

I know, the headline also says that, however, most of the accidents that I have seen is somone trying to get onto 17th, not 35........and if you look at the sentence that is in quotes in my statement, it seems to verify it. It also says that since 17th is a local road they do not need state prmission to make it a No Left Turn road........either way, there it still is a good idea

In an effort to add to the confusion, Isn't the picture depicting a left turn off 35 north into 17th? God I need more coffee!

Mickey, drink more coffee and look at both pictures again. One veh is exiting 17th ave to Rt 35 SB, the other veh Rt 35 SB turning left onto 17th ave EB.

I agree Maureen a left turn lane onto 17th would help but we would need added speeding enforcement. As it is now cars fly through the neighborhood. I live just off of 17th Ave. and make the left from 35S on 17th East often. There is ample room to pull over out of the southerly flow on 35 so as to not obstruct traffic. I never make the left from 17th westbound onto 35 south. It's too risky. Either the traffic is jammed up and you cannot get in or when there is light sourtherly flow on 35 the cars seem to exceed the speed limit coming south and it is just too dangerous to risk pulling out and not being able to get a good look up the road as it makes the slight bend under the overpass.

Jim, My lack of coffee might be why I didn't even notice the second picture. Keith, ouch!
