POLL: Should Bathing Suits Be Allowed on the Boardwalk?

An old Asbury Park law says bathing suits are banned on the city's boardwalk

An ordinance that dates back decades ago leaves Asbury Park beach boardwalk patrons breaking the law.

The ordinance bans bathing suits on the city's boardwalk, but has little to no enforcement in the city these days.

Former Asbury Park Councilwoman Louise Murray, who is now the municipal chair for the Asbury Park Republican Party, reminded the council of this ordinance at a June 20 council meeting.

“I’ll be darned if I want to be standing at a bar and have somebody slither up in a Speedo or bikini that shouldn’t be in a bathing suit,” Murray said, according to the Asbury Park Sun. “It’s disgraceful … I implore you to enforce this, but do not amend it.”

And according to the Asbury Park Sun, Deputy Mayor John Loffredo agrees.

This specific ordinance covers several beach activities, including not digging a hole on the beach more than 12 inches deep and “No person clad in bathing attire shall be on the boardwalk or the public walks adjacent thereto.”

Asbury Park has no public changing rooms or showers on its boardwalk.

When I was a child you had to wear a cover up over your bathing suit even in Belmar! Maybe we should require that again!

Belmar did require cover ups for a time, and I see nothing wrong with that, but I don't think it needs to be made an offense subject to ticketing! People are just coming back to Asbury Park, why throw a wrench into the gears, Ms. Murray? I do agree that cover ups should be required in bars and eating establishments, as well as shoes - it's just common sense and health friendly (plus it won't make me sick to my stomach). So, no, I don't think it should be a requirement, but it should be subject to rules set by eating and drinking establishments, which I believe are already in place.

Hey Louise Murray, I would be more offended if I walked up to the bar and you were standing there with your head up your @$$. Really? "You will be darned" if someone wears a bathiung suit but shootings and selling drugs on every other corner is ok?
