In a move expected to affect up to 800,000 people, President Barack Obama announced Friday a plan to allow some young illegal immigrants the ability to apply for temporary legal status and work permits.
The move would stop deportations for undocumented people under certain conditions. To be eligible - they must have come to the United States under the age of 16 and lived in the US for at least five years. They must be in school, have graduated from high school, or have been honorably discharged from the US military. In addition, those applying must not have been convicted of any felony or significant misdemeanors.
The move raised the ire of many immediately - including one reporter who heckled the president during the speech. But Obama said of the illegal immigrants, "They are Americans in their hearts, in their minds, in every single way but one -- on paper." The president said the move is not "amnesty" and encouraged Congress to pass a broader immigration bill.
Some see the move as a political one designed to mollify Latino voters in the upcoming presidential election.
What do you think of the president's actions?
BTW, many undocumented persons are doing menial labor and put the blame on people who are hiring them. The media has exposed politicians who have "illegals' working for them..Again, corruption..
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/12/obamas-record-high-deportations-draw-hispanic-scorn/ and Debra...please focus on the fact...the children that the President singled out in this order are not the people you are describing in your statement...and BTW, so what if it is politically motivated. Everything that Romney has said and then changed his mind about and then stumbled over to explain what he doesn't know is totally politically motivated because he's trying to please anyone who might vote for him. If necessary, he'll say the sun is shining at midnight if someone insists it is and then blame Obama if it isn't. (I'm not talking about the Arctic Circle where the sun shines all day long in the summer)
so not the best example.
are you a non native English speaker? cause your posts are very difficult to understand.
The charge is pretty funny, actually. I suppose Maggie doesn't buy anything made in China. Commie country, 'ya know.
Liberals have tried to own these issues, tried to deal with them... whilst Conservatives have had one agenda http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-A09a_gHJc
To get that work permit, the person here illegally would have to admit being here illegally (why else would the person need a work permit?) and provide all sorts of personal info (e.g. where to find the person!) In other words, the person would be putting a big target on his or her back for ICE deportation in two years when the program expires (if not extended.) What person here illegally (and in his right mind), will go to the government, announce being here illegally (e.g. plead guilty), provide all sorts of information as to where that person lives etc. to get a work permit only to be a target for deportation in two years? Or, perhaps sooner if Governor Romney is elected and he decides to cancel the temporary program? Answer: no one. People here illegally are not looking for ways to identify themselves to the government for a temporary program. The president’s new immigration policy will be rationally perceived as simply bait for ICE, and not some great dream.
The government has ZERO concern about deporting these people...the snowball has grown too big...and no one wants to pay to have it pushed up the hill.
