Ron Griffiths Announced to Run with Councilwoman Shutzer

Ron Griffiths will run with Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer for Borough Council.

After a long and intense process, the Freehold Borough Democrats know who Council President Sharon Shutzer will be running with in the June primary.

Ron Griffiths, President of the Freehold Borough Housing Corporation and a longtime resident of Freehold Borough, was announced to run with Shutzer last night at the Freehold Borough Democrats reorganization meeting.

“To say that I am honored that there are so many people in this town that would have wanted the opportunity to run with me is an understatement, I was overwhelmed,” said Shutzer. “When the committee told me who was chosen I emailed Ron and said ‘I am very honored to have you as a running mate'.”

Griffiths was chosen from 10 original candidates by a nominating committee. The committee, made up of Councilman Kevin Kane, Councilman George Schnurr, Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer, and Borough Attorney, Kerry Higgins, held interviews, brought candidates before the Monmouth County committee and then ultimately voted on Shutzer’s running mate.

“The nominating committee felt that Ron’s experience, background, and well proven commitment to Freehold, make him and ideal candidate for Council,” said Kane.

Minor correction: The Freehold Borough Democrats now know the identity of the 3 candidates that will appear on the June 5th primary ballot: 20 year incumbent Borough Council President Sharon Shutzer, Ron Griffiths, and Dan Xavier (who filed for a ballot position last week.) The June 5th primary will ultimately determine which two candidates are selected to represent the Democratic Party for this November's general election. This will be the first contested primary election in Freehold Borough since 1981.

Is there going to be a forum before the primary where we can meet the candidates and ask questions?

I think that would be a WONDERFUL idea. I'm in...

Excellent! Let's organize one! Where, what time, and how do we convince people to come?

Michele - For a true debate to occur, the other two candidates must commit that they will attend. Once they agree, a time and location can be established. (I will meet where ever and whenever - I'm very flexible and accommodating.) As far as learning about each candidate's individual platform, I would imagine both Mrs. Shutzer and Mr. Griffiths will be making a concentrated effort to disseminate their ideas and meet with residents. I know I will. It's important to note that because this is a primary election, only registered Democrats can vote on June 5th. Anyone wishing to participate must be a registered Democrat by April 11th to take part in this process. Dan Xavier

Dan, one minor correction. On the day of the primary, any registered voter can vote, but only for their own party candidates. Republicans will be voting for their own ticket and both parties will be voting for several offices that day, beyond just the council candidates. Good luck with the candidates forum, I look forward to it.
