Another Good Report Card For Biotechnology High

Newsweek's annual list of top high schools gives high ranks to Biotech high

The good grades continue to come in at Biotechnology High School as the second national magazine rated the Momouth County Vocational School District academy  one of the country’s top high schools.

Newsweek magazine’s annual rating of high schools across the country put Biotech high at 24 in its top high schools in the country. The magazine put Biotech at the #2 spot in the state, just behind High Technology High School, another school in the same district.

The rankings follow the U.S. News & World Report annual rankings, which put the Freehold Township competitive entrance high school at #1 in the state and #8 in the country. Those rankings were release two weeks ago.

Linda Eno, principal of Biotechnology High School, said the pair of magazine rankings are evidence that there is a place for selective entry high schools.

“I think it shows that we get great kids and we do great things with them,’’ Eno said. “It continues to affirm that the career academy high school is a good model.’’

Eno said she was happy the Newsweek rankings compared selective entry high schools against one another to come up with their rankings – a comparison which did not pit open entry public schools against the competitive entry schools.

“We recognize that is not a fair comparison,’’ Eno said. “We try not to toot our own horns around those things because it says unkind things for those who are doing a good job with an entirely different set of circumstances.’’

The Newsweek rankings come at a stressful time for Biotech students, who are in the midst of a battery of tests.

“Right about now when they’re slogging their way throught testing, this is a nice pat on the back,’’ Eno said.
