Author Michael Fowler at Monmouth County Historical Society

As part of its “Historically Speaking” lecture series, Monmouth County Historical Association is pleased to welcome Michael Fowler to speak on the subject of his recent publication, “Lifeguarding at the Jersey Shore,” Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m. The lecture will be held in the first-floor exhibition gallery at the Association’s Headquarters, 70 Court Street, Freehold.

Fowler, a Professor of Marketing at Brookdale College, photographer, and local historian, has been ocean lifeguarding every summer since 1964.  His articles on this subject have been published by “American Lifeguard” magazine and elsewhere.  He was Lifeguard Captain at Avon-by-the-Sea for 19 years and is presently Lifeguard Supervisor for Monmouth County Park System. The intriguing story of ocean rescue will be presented from early lighthouses and the founding of the United States Life Saving Service in 1849 to the present day.  Archival photographs will illustrate the development of this service at the New Jersey shore.

The lecture is open to the public and admission is free. Refreshments will be served following Mr. Fowler’s presentation. Please call 732-462-1466 for further information or to let us know that you will attend. The gallery on the first floor of the Museum, where the lecture will be held, is accessible to persons with disabilities. If there are any special needs that require accommodation, please contact the Office at 732-462-1466 within 24 hours of the presentation.
