FBEF Awards Grants to Borough Teachers

Seven grants were awarded to Freehold Borough Teachers from the Freehold Borough Education Foundation at last night's Borough Board of Education meeting.

From iPads, to after-school programs, to even a classroom library face-lift, several Freehold Borough teachers received an opportunity to enhance their student’s lessons with grants from the Freehold Borough Education Foundation (FBEF).

At the , FBEF representative, Lynn Reich, announced which Borough teachers recieved grants and for which project they will be used for.

“Some of the grants are for particular school gear and some of the grants are on-going because equipment remains in the school district and builds upon programs that the staff members have,” explained Reich.

Teachers originally applied for the grants during the fall. Now that the grants have been awarded, teachers are able to begin implementing their new programs with the grant money. 

received three different grants. Preschool teacher, Lauren Filipek, was awarded $998 for the purchase of two iPads to use in the program titled, “iPads for Our Pad”. Fourth grade teacher, Wendy Garcia-Buchanan was awarded $1500 for her “Flip to Zip” program which will be used to make technology available to students as they progress in their visual storytelling efforts. First grade teacher, Meghan Reistrom, was also awarded a grant worth $750.06 for a “Classroom Library Facelift”. According to Reich, the “facelift” will turn the current classroom library into a comfortable reading environment that encourages independent reading with books that are a good fit for the student’s abilities.

had two teachers receive grants last night. Mary Ann Illes, was awarded $750 to purchase 10 Speaking School Dictionaries. These electronic dictionaries are to be used in small group instruction. Seventh grade teacher, Michael Reed, was also awarded a grant worth $750 for supplies needed for a new after-school program called “Kicking It Old School”. The new program aims to reinforce respect and responsibility through educational games and overall, reduce incidents of bullying. 

also received two grants from the FBEF. Fourth and fifth grade teachers, Nicole Sabel, Katie Walsh, and Down Fetterly, received a grant worth $1400 for enhancing writing instruction with an application called “Teachers Writing Library” that will provide a collection of mentor texts for staff members to use as a reference. Bilingual third through fifth grade teacher, Linda Maya, also received a grant of $300 for a seven unit book kit that will supplement a reading program for students.

In total, $6,448.06 was been awarded to about 11 teachers in Freehold Borough schools to benefit student’s learning.
