Spahn Celebrates 1,000 Points as FHS Girls Basketball Advances in Tournament

Freehold High School defeated Red Bank Regional in the first round of the NJSIAA tournament with a final score of 50-30.

Colonials girls basketball team took home a win in the first round of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) tournament. Freehold High School (FHS) defeated Red Bank Regional (RBR) 50-30 on Tuesday in a game that featured senior Camerin Spahn's 1,000th point.

The Colonials and Buccaneers both came out strong keeping the first half close with neither team leading more than a couple points.

At the half, the Colonials led the Buccaneers by two points, with a score of 21 to 19. After the half, the Colonials began moving the ball even faster, bringing their score to 30 and giving up only three points, to bring the Buccaneers to 26 after the third.

“This is probably the most unselfish team I have ever had," said FHS girls varsity basketball coach Jennifer Brzucki. "They look for each other. It is never ‘Me! Me! Me!’ They always look to pass, we have a different set of options on offense and they do a really nice job of it and its really a credit to them and their hard work and them knowing where each other are on the court."

The final quarter of the game allowed the Colonials to advance even further, by only letting the Buccaneers score with two minutes left on the clock.

Tuesday’s night victory is a highlight for all of the Colonials, but especially for Saphn, who celebrated the high school career hallmark of her 1000th point.

“I was really close to hitting 1,000 last game. I scored 27 points in our last game so I only three points away coming into this game. But having scored my 1,000th point and winning this game is a nice way to advance in the tournament,” said Spahn.

The Colonials will take on the winner of Summerville vs. Jackson on Thursday at home in the second round of the NJSIAA tournament.
