Township BOE Explores Sale of Small Parcels

Land on West Freehold and Barkalow properties will be surveyed.

The Freehold Township School District will explore selling small parcels of land on the and properties.

The Freehold Township Board of Education approved resolutions on Aug. 30 allowing land surveyors to measure sections of the parcels for possible sale. Business Administrator Brian Boyle said a neighboring property owner expressed interested in a strip of land behind next to the back parking lot.

“The (Barkalow) property itself is flag-shaped. We have a right of way access to Stillwells Corner Road that we used to use,” Boyle said. The portion of land is not in use by the school but the district must mow it and maintain it.

In addition, the owner of the Colonial Plaza Shopping Center contacted the district about purchasing a piece of land behind the plaza that is part of the West Freehold Elementary School property, Boyle said.

“Since they added the two restaurants there, they have an overflow of parking. They want to be able to have their staff park there so that they can have more parking for customers,” Boyle said.

He noted that the properties cannot be sold directly to the individuals who contacted the district but have to be put up for bid should the board decide to move forward with a sale.
