Week in Sports: Holmdel, Manalapan, Matawan Reg. Fight for Bragging Rights

The best fall sports teams are racing to playoffs, Meet of Champions

Cross Country

In the Group II State Championships, held at Holmdel Park Saturday, Holmdel High School was lead by supporters on both sides of the spectrum.

Junior Lennon Cooper finished 11th in the Girls 5k race of Group II, averaging a 6:18 mile. Her teammate, freshman Marin Warner, finished just behind, in 21st, averaging 6:34 per mile, and running the map in 20:24 as her final time.

Senior Travis Fodor of Holmdel finished ninth overall in the boys 5k race, group II, averaging 5:22 per mile and running 16:40 in the final. His teammate, junior Jack Baisley finished 14th overall, averaging 5:26 a mile and putting in a final time of 16:51. The team advances to the Meet of Championships on Saturday at Holmdel Park the the 20 best teams in the state.

The Holmdel Hornets Boys Varsity Soccer Team finished the business that they did not complete in the Shore Conference Tournament, taking down top-seeded Governor Livingston, 2-1 in the Central Jersey Group II final. They moved forward, to the Group II tournament, where they took down Haddonfield, 2-1. They will now play Bernards High School on Sunday at the College of New Jersey for the state title.

Football

The Manalapan Braves continued their strong season into the playoffs, where they took The Braves, behind a strong running attack, will now take on third-seeded West Windsor Plainsboro South on Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 pm at Manalapan high school.

Matawan Regional advanced as well, 28-14, over third-seeded Carteret in the first round of the Central Jersey Group II sectional playoffs. The Huskies will now return to play a Shore Conference foe -- taking on Manasquan on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1 pm at Manasquan high school.

Featured Athlete

Manalapan running back John Sieczkowski added another surreal game to his already impressive season, carrying the ball 41 times for 331 yards and running for three touchdowns against a stingy Brick Memorial defense that had been strong all season. The tailback's numbers were enough to send Manalapan to the semi-finals of the sectional playoffs as Manalapan is in search for their first group title in school history.
