Week in Sports: Monmouth Teams Play for Soccer Titles

Lady Colonials, Huskies to battle for sectional title, along with Holmdel boys and Marlboro girls soccer teams.

Boys Soccer

After falling short in the Shore Conference final last week, the Holdmel Hornets boys soccer' team is making their mark once again, this time in the Central Jersey Group II state tournament. The Hornets topped Red Bank Regional, 1-0 in the quarterfinals, and later, took down Delaware Valley, 2-1 in the semi-finals, cementing themselves in the group final, where they will take on top-seeded Governor Livingston on Friday.

Freehold Boro advanced to the Central Jersey Group III finals, after a win over Long Branch in penalty kicks last Friday, but they fell to Allentown, 5-1.

The Patriots made it to the quarterfinals, but they were eliminated by Roncocas Valley in penalty kicks late last week.

Girls Soccer

took home the Group III title on Thursday with a 1-0 win over the Freehold Boro Lady Colonials.

Fourth-seeded Freehold Boro beat out fifth-seeded Hightstown last Thursday, 1-0, and on Monday, took down top-seeded Wall in penalty kicks to reach the tournament final.

The Lady Huskies, seeded seventh, ousted (15) Nottingham, 2-1, last Thursday and later defeated (11) Ocean Township, 3-1, solidifying their spot in the first sectional final in school history.

The Marlboro Lady Mustangs made a stand on Thursday, when took on top-seeded Montgomery in the Central Jersey Group IV final. The Mustangs ultimately lost in penalty kicks after a 2-2, but their run was a Cinderella story. Marlboro upset (7) Old Bridge, 3-2, before taking down Class A-North rival, Manalapan, 3-2 in the sectional semi-finals.

The Braves, seeded 11, beat West-Windsor Plainsboro South, 1-0 in the quarterfinals before falling to Marlboro.

Field Hockey

Freehold Boro topped Warren Hills, 3-2, in the Central Jersey Group III sectional title.

Football

The Manalapan Braves finished their regular season strong, notching their seventh consecutive win, this time beating Toms River North, 35-20, behind tailback John Sieczkowski's five touchdowns. The Braves earned the two-seed and will take on Brick Memorial, seeded seventh. Manalapan beat Brick Memorial two weeks ago on a game-winning field goal, and should expect a tough game from the Mustangs, who have been in the Central Jersey Group IV final the past three seasons.

The Huskies finished their regular season on a high note with a 56-0 win over East Brunswick, giving them a sixth-seed in the Central Jersey Group II state playoffs. In the first round, Matawan Regional will travel to Cartert to take on the third-seeded Ramblers, who are a perfect 8-0.

Emily Wold scored all three goals for the Lady Colonials in their 3-2 win over Warren Hills in the Central Jersey Group III field hockey sectional final. Wold scored all three goals within 22 minutes of each other. They in the semifinal round for the Group III championship, with Wold scoring three goals.
