Week in Sports: Teams in Full Swings After Holiday Break

Wrestling teams join other winter sports that have started their 2012 season.

Hockey

The , playing for the first time in two and a half weeks, dropped their road game to divisional opponent Wall, 5-3, falling to 1-5 on the season.

The , who were also playing for the first time after an extended break, struggled in their 8-1 loss to the high-flying Purple Roses. Freehold Boro is now 3-4 on the season.

The Braves lost their second straight game after earning their first win of the season, this time falling to the Shore Conference's only undefeated team, Rumson-Fair Haven, 9-2. Manalapan now sits at 1-8 in Brad Gardner's first season as the head coach.

Despite things slowly climbing, the Mustangs dropped a tight Shore 'D' battle with Point Pleasant Boro, 5-4. The loss was their first game played since their impressive win over St. Rose on Dec. 23. They are 2-6 in the 2011-2012 season.

Boys Basketball

The Patriots and Braves split a home-and-home series with each other this week, atop the A-North. Manalapan got the better of Freehold Township, 53-40, before the Patriots were able to answer with a 68-48 win. Casey Skievaski, Jake Catanzaro and John Horrigan all lead Freehold Township with 18-points apiece in the win.

Through December, Freehold Township is second in the A-North with a 5-2 overall record and Manalapan is fourth with a 4-1 overall record.

In their only game of the week, the Colonials toasted Monmouth Regional, behind Hugo Gomez' 17 points Tyrod Smith-Rush's 16 points. They are 6-2.

The Mustangs fell hard this week, 78-41 to Christian Brothers Academy, as they are still in search of their first win of the season. Brian Fontanetta was the high-man for Marlboro (0-4) with 12 points.

The Hornets boys' basketball team continued to look impressive this week in their 68-57 win over Johnson. Tim McDonnel was the go-to-guy for Holmdel. He was able to run past Johnson in overtime of their consolation round game. McDonnel had six points in overtime, leading the Hornets to an 18-7 run to finish the game.

The Huskies bumped their record over .500 this week in a strong win over Red Bank Regional, 58-44. Larry Smith was impressive, recording a double-double with 34 points and 11 rebounds, along with Connor Nappi's with nine points and seven rebounds, leading Matawan to the win and a 5-4 record.

Girls Basketball

The Lady Patriots proved to still be the best team in the Shore Conference, with a dominant win over divisional rival Manalapan, 66-56. Lily Weinstein lead the Patriots with 18 points, and Michelle Johnston finished close behind with 13 points as Freehold Township remained undefeated at 7-0.

Jasmine McCall had a strong game for the Braves (1-6), ending with 25 points.

The Colonials earned their second win of the season this week in a 36-34 win over Monmouth Regional. Freehold Boro was lead by Kim Dana, who notched 14 points in the road win.

The Lady Mustangs won big this week over Bordentown in the championship game of the J. Michael Tucker Tournament, 49-27. Haley Unger finished with 14 points and Rachel Neuman added 10 points for Marlboro to lead them in the win.

Holmdel fell to Rumson-Fair Haven, 47-39, this week. The Lady Hornets were lead by Cassie Fontana, who scored 11 points, but was limited to just four in the second half.

Matawan Regional topped Red Bank Regional, 39-31, in Little Silver this week, behind Lauren Postell's 13 points and Montana Bertoli's 11 points.

Wrestling

Freehold Township buried Middletown North, 49-19 in their only match of the week. The Patriots had win streaks of five and three to take control over Middletown North and remain unbeaten at 2-0 on the young season.

The Colonials, much like their cross-town rival, took care of the Lions this week with a 44-22 win over Middletown North. Freehold Boro had a six-match win streak to take a lead they would not relinquish, as they sit at 3-0.

The Braves fell to Ocean Township, 50-15, this week. Manalapan got a pin from Mike Aronson at 132 pounds and wins from Geoff Kelman and Jason Cocklin.

The Mustangs lost hard to Howell in their lone match of the week, 62-9. Marlboro got wins from Dan Saraiva at 120 pounds and Dan Hwang with a pin at 170 pounds.

The Hornets had a big win this week of Shore Regional, 49-30. Holmdel was lead by four straight winning bouts to open the match, and traded wins with the Falcons for the rest of the match.

The Huskies edged out St. John Vianney, 36-32 in wrestling action on the mats this week. Forefit wins at 220-pounds and heavyweight played a big role in Matawan's win, accounting for six points late in the match.
