Colonials Boys Volleyball Uses Late Set Surges to Sweep Howell 2-0

Freehold Boro High School defeated Howell Friday two sets to none.

In their last match before spring break, host Freehold Boro (2-6) boys volleyball swept Howell (4-3) Friday 2-0. The Colonials used a late surge in each set to put the Rebels away, giving head coach Ben DiBiase something to smile about.

“I don’t think that [the win] was any more important than any of the other matches that we’ve played,” DiBiase said. “But it was nice, going into the little break we have now, to be able to get back on the right side of things.”

The first set was back and forth all the way, with nice kills and blocks from both teams keeping it close. Boro’s Brody Indursky soon took over, however, and started a service run that erased a small deficit, tied the set at 20, and ultimately gave all the momentum to Freehold. A block by Mike Holdorf made it 22-20 Colonials, and from there Freehold took the rest of the set and won it going away 25-20. DiBiase pointed to Indursky’s service run as the big key.

“It was important because it could have easily gone the other way when they had their best server serving to us. Any type of service run can really turn the tide.”

Indursky finished with eight assists, one kill, and 12 service points.

The second set opened up much the same way the first did with timely kills and blocks and some scattered aces from both teams keeping the score tight.

However, at 16-11, Howell hit a ball that they thought was in and Freehold thought was out. It was ruled in. Freehold protested and got visibly frustrated; that lit a spark under them.

They scored every point in the rest of the set but two, and a Todd Cook ace clinched the set 25-14 and gave Freehold the match--only their second win of the young season.

Cook finished with four digs, two kills, five blocks and three service points. Jack Gailing led Howell with six kills, one block, two digs, four aces and eight service points.

For DiBiase, he hopes this performance can carry over when their schedule resumes after this upcoming break.

“[We want to see the] same kind of effort. We want to see consistency in all aspects of the game.”

Freehold returns to action on Wednesday, April 27 against Long Branch.
