Freehold Football Just Around the Corner

Locals set for battle day before Thanksgiving.

In two weeks the Shore Conference football season will officially kick off and the Colonials and Patriots of the two Freehold high schools will be looking to make their mark in their respective divisions.

With Yom Kippur starting on the night of September 13 the local schools will start their seasons on Thursday. Freehold Borough will travel to Lakewood to take on the Piners in a non-division contest. Shore Conference football fans will see a familiar face on the Lakewood sidelines as former Point Boro football coach Calvin Thompson takes over as the team’s offensive coordinator with the 3 p.m. kickoff.

Freehold Township starts their season with a long road trip. The local team makes the trip to Southern Regional for a 6:30 start time. The Patriots will open the A North schedule at home on September 20 when they welcome the always dangerous Manalapan Braves to town. The Colonials will also open the B North division at home with a game against Matawan the following day starting at 1 p.m.

Week three features Freehold Borough traveling to Wall for a 7 p.m. Friday night game and a bye week for the township. Freehold Township will then welcome Marlboro to town on October 4 with a bye week for the Borough.

Freehold Township will make its first trip out of the conference for the year on October 11 when they will hit the road to take on Sayreville. The next day Freehold Borough will welcome the Caseys of Red Bank Catholic to town for a 1 p.m. game.

Middletown South will come to town to take on Freehold Township on October 18 and the next day Borough will head to Long Branch to take on the Green Wave. As October comes to an end the Patriots will welcome the Howell Rebels to town on October 25 in a classic rivalry game. The next day the Patriots will welcome the squad from Neptune to town for an afternoon battle on the gridiron.

November starts with Borough heading to Red Bank under the Friday night lights and Township heading to Colts Neck for a Saturday contest. During the second week of November Freehold Borough will welcome the squad from Ocean to town for another big late season game before the state tournament gets underway.

The regular season wraps up with the traditional Thanksgiving battle between the two squads set for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday November 27 at 5:30 p.m.
