The start of a new year brings the return of racing to the Freehold Raceway even as our area awaits the arrival of the first winter storm of the year.

According to information posted on the track’s Facebook page the Winter/Spring Meet is set to kick off today with a 10-race card with new classifications aimed at improving the experience for everyone involved. “Feedback has been positive, and the new ABC system should benefit both the horsemen and our patrons,” General Manager Howard Bruno said. “We’re anticipating more competitive racing with fewer prohibitive favorites and shorter payouts.”

Director of Racing Karen Fagliarone said more than 700 horses have been classified with applications still being accepted. She said purses should average close to $40,000 per day.

The new season will be a chance for driver Eric Abbatiello and trainer Vincent Fusco Jr. to defend their 2013 titles.

Races for the new season will be held Thursdays through Saturday through May 17. there will also be special holiday races on Monday January 20 and February 17. Post time is set for 12:30 p.m. Qualifiers will be held today starting at 9:30 a.m.
