Freehold Soccer League: Ready for Kickoff

The Freehold Soccer League will begin its season this Saturday with an opening ceremony.

For Freehold Soccer League (FSL) players, the most wonderful time of the year is almost here.

This Saturday will mark the beginning of the 2012 FSL season. Complete with a parade and activities at Jackson Mills Fields, the kick off celebration means the official start of the season, allowing Freehold players to show off their skills against neighboring teams.

At a practice Wednesday night, the FSL U8 Boys team, the Scorpions, explained what they were looking forward to most this season.

In almost unison, the Scorpions said that winning games and scoring goals was what they were looking forward to most this year. Winning against their biggest rivals, Manalapan and Ocean, was also something the boys hoped for this season.

Head Coach Mike Rosseel and Assistant Coach Kevin O'Malley will lead the Scorpions this season. Although this is the first year the team will be playing together, the majority of the players have been playing soccer since they were three and four.

“Our team motto is if your not making mistakes your not taking risks,” said Rosseel. “Our goal is to get better each week and be competitive in every game. We are proud to represent Freehold Soccer League. We want to teach the boys to respect the game and represent Freehold each week.”

The Scorpions will play through November and compete in four tournaments. Their first game of the season will be on Sunday, Sept. 9 against Holmdel.
