Heavy rain targets Freehold today through Thursday

A heavy rain event is developing for Monmouth County that will lead to areas of flash flooding and poor driving conditions.

A powerful upper low over the Southeast coast will produce periods of moderate to heavy rain throughout Monmouth County today on through Thursday morning.

As this upper low intensifies over the southern Mid Atlantic, the rain will become steady and heavy this afternoon on through tomorrow afternoon with a few embedded thunderstorms.  The southeasterly winds around 10 to 20 mph off the Atlantic will continue to import a tropical Atlantic air mass into the region leading to temperatures rising into the upper 60's to lower 70's for highs today and tomorrow and falling into the upper 50's to lower 60's for lows tonight.  As temperatures fall tonight, the potential for locally dense fog will become a problem, further reducing visibility.  However, the most significant impact from this storm will be the threat for heavy rainfall ranging from 2 to 3 inches with locally higher amounts.

This heavy rainfall will lead to localized flash flooding of streams and small rivers throughout Monmouth County and may cause some roads to be submerged in heavy rainfall.  Use caution when driving in this rain storm as hydroplaning is a significant threat along with submerged roads being deeper than they appear.

The rain will exit by Thursday afternoon with lingering showers through Friday.  A warmer and more humid air mass will be on the way for the weekend with temperatures averaging well above normal with highs in the upper 70's to mid 80's!
