Rain Storm Brings a Variety of Threats to Central New Jersey

An area of low pressure that will move towards the New Jersey coastal waters tomorrow through Monday will produce very heavy rainfall over central New Jersey.  This low pressure system will produce a variety of threats to the region through Monday as a result.

As I discussed yesterday, the development of this storm may be a preview of what we can expect for this Fall and maybe even the winter.  I'll have to continue to monitor the development of this pattern going forward.  Aside from the potential long term influences of this weather pattern, I do have some concerns with this storm overall for all of central New Jersey.

First, the obvious threat is the heavy rainfall with two to three inches possible by the end of Monday.  The heavy rainfall is going to interact with a very dry low level boundary layer.  In other words, the ground is very dry.  As a result, the rain will put a rapid stress on drainage systems, which could lead to localized flash flooding of streams and small rivers.  My main concern though will be the road ways where residue  oils from cars which has lingered on the very dry roadways will make for very slippery road conditions. Use caution when driving tomorrow and Monday as roads will be more slippery than you think.

Along the coast, the persistent easterly wind along the coast will lead to the threat for minor coastal flooding and enhanced wave heights.  This storm will not be a major storm in terms of coastal flooding, but the threat does exist and will have to be monitored.

This storm may be the first of many for this up coming Fall pattern that will lead to heavy rainfall and will put a major dent in the below normal rainfall totals over central New Jersey.  Don't be surprised if this type of storm shows up many times in September and October.
