It was not a big move from the parking lot of the Freehold Raceway across Route 9 to the Freehold Raceway Mall but even with the move the 7th Annual Italian Festival got off to a great start on Wednesday night.
Cheryl Scuorzo, President of the Italian American Association of Monmouth County said after six years at the track the festival needed a larger lot to work with and the area near Dick’s Sporting Goods provided the perfect location without a big change in geography.
Scuorzo said the annual event helps fund the Association’s scholarship fund, benefits local charities and also bolsters the cultural fund. The festival includes a wide variety of food and treats for your tastebuds and games and rides for the younger attendees.
Set to run through Saturday night the festival includes travelling musicians, Italian singers and dance groups performing throughout the evening fun and games.
With the new location comes the new traffic that Scuorzo said she hopes will benefit the festival and the mall. “I think it’s going to be a mutual thing for both of us,” she said. “The visibility was good and I think we’ve established that people kind of look for it. The mall is a help but I think we’ve helped them also.”
The festivities are held every night from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m.
