The Andy Statman Trio: "Old Brooklyn"

The Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County is excited to welcome musical luminary Andy Statman to the Hayloft Stage on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at 2 PM when the internationally acclaimed clarinetist and mandolinist will take you on an inspiration musical journey "Old Brooklyn" featuring the sounds of  klezmer, bluegrass and American jazz.  He will be accompanied by Jim Whitney on bass and Larry Eagle on drums.  Admission is $22.00 members, $25.00 non-members, $18.00 students.

It has been said of Andy Statman's music "that it meanders through time, geography and culture, moving freely among the before, the present and the after".  Born into a musical family he grew up  singing and listening to every variety of music, he became obsessed with bluegrass, studied guitar and banjo and eventually fell in love with the mandolin.  He took lessons from mandolin master David Grisman and in his late teenage years mastered jazz saxophone with Ralph Grando as his mentor.

Alongside his quest for musical excellence was his gradual spiritual awakening.  His search for his Jewish heritage led him to legendary klezmer clarinetist Dave Tarras in the 1970s and he recorded several albums that became influential in the revival of klezmer music. The music also led him to embrace life as a Modern Orthodox Jew.  In the1990s he again changed course and gravitated towards American jazz.

This journey is one Andy Statman says he revisits with his trio each time they perform. "We're creating an experience between the audience and us," with their meditations on Hasidic music and groove driven American - roots music.
