Remember that movie Psycho?  It seems that some scam artists pose as potential buyers at open houses with the intent to steal known in some circles as Psycho Buyers.  In spite of diligent efforts by Realtors to monitor visitors to open houses it is just sometimes impossible to keep their eye on every person, especially if numerous prospects show up at the same time.  Every person who decides to allow the Realtor to conduct an open house should take basic steps to secure all valuables.  There are people who “take mementos” like an ash tray or a figurine.  I have read stories of people even having lingerie stolen as well.  So here are some helpful hints for sellers:

1.      Secure all personal information such as credit card information, bills, social security cards and numbers, bank statements, checks, personal identification such as driving licenses etc…  Identity theft is big business and unraveling an identity theft will be emotionally devastating and could be costly;

2.      Lock lingerie or expensive clothing, jewelry art work in a closet or safe;

3.      Put away all small sized family photos in frames or photo books that are accessible and easily hidden in a coat or pants;

4.      Do not leave money around;

5.      Remove citations or any identifying information that could identify the owner as law enforcement or as a fire arms owner as this will alert a prospective evil doer that there are weapons in the house;

6.      Remove all spare keys to the house or family cars;

7.      Remove all garage door openers as they could easily be stolen and allow an evil doer access to your home via the garage;

8.      After the open house is done check that every window and door is locked to ensure that an evil doer did not allow himself easy access to your home unbeknownst to you.

These are just a few helpful hints.  Always use caution.  Remember these folks are strangers, open houses are widely advertised and unfortunately there are bad people out there.
