How Freehold Residents Can Help Japan

The Red Cross has provided us with the most efficient ways to help the people of Japan

Freehold Township and Freehold Borough are included the Jersey Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross, the main office of which is located at 1540 West Park Avenue, Tinton Falls. Concerned citizens can best help the victims of the disaster in Japan by sending donations through the national organization rather than the local chapter. To go through the proper channels to contribute to the American Red Cross, you can take a number of routes.

All telephone monetary donations can be made to 800-733-2767.  There will be operators on call to take your information. All donations will be sent directly to Red Cross offices in Washington, D.C. Contributors can also text 90999. This will automatically offer a $10 donation. Receipt of the contribution will appear on your phone bill. For those who want to send payment directly, a check should be made out to the American Red Cross and sent to the American Red Cross For Japan Disaster Relief, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C.  20013.

You can also go directly to the Web site www.redcross.org and select “Donations.” The site will offer updated information about the disaster privy to the Red Cross.

Concerned citizens are urged to contribute directly to the Red Cross to circumvent middleman delays and unnecessary administrative fees. As in 9/11, unscrupulous organizations are popping up and misappropriating funds. You are encouraged to investigate before you give to make sure your donation reaches the hands of those in need.

When making your contribution, please keep in mind that March is Red Cross Month and the organization can always use your help.

In addition to direct donations, Chico’s in Freehold Raceway Mall will be hosting a charity event for Red Cross Japan Disaster Relief on Thursday, March 24 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The store will donate 10 percent of all purchases to the cause.
