“Rev” Remembered

Reverend Malcolm Sheldon Steele was remembered fondly by Freehold Borough Council members during Tuesday’s Council meeting.

Freehold Borough's Bethel A.M.E Church will remember their longtime pastor Rev. Malcolm Sheldon Steele on Friday, Sept.7. Steele, 84, of Hightstown, was a pastor at Bethel A.M.E. Church for 36 years before his death at the Jersey Shore Medical Center following a short illness. According to Steele’s obituary, Steele came to Freehold after a 1956 transfer to the New Jersey Annual Conference, receiving the appointment to preach and pastor at Bethel A.M.E. Church. More commonly referred to as “Rev”, Steele was also employed as Disciplinarian at the Park Avenue Elementary School for 25 years. Steele’s obituary further explained that in addition to Bethel A.M.E.
