Celebrate Black History Month Through Monmouth County Events

The Monmouth County Library and The Court Street School is presenting moving presentations for Black History Month.

Black History Month is celebrated in the U.S. throughout the month of February. American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week to commemorate the contributions that people of African descent have made to our nation. The first celebration occurred on Feb. 12, 1926. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for the celebration to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and editor Frederick Douglass. In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month. Each year, U.S. presidents declare February National African-American History Month. Court Street School Educational Community Center Celebrates Black History Month

Celebration will feature area vocalists, dancers, spoken word performers and poetry.

The Court Street School Educational Community Center (CSSECC) is coming together later this month to celebrate Black History Month. The celebration will commemorate history, dreams, struggles, wisdom, experience, and achievements from Black History Month. The event will be held at the First Baptist Church and will feature many performances from Freehold and area residents. The pastor for this year’s celebration will be Rev. William Frederickson. The current list of performances include: The celebration will begin at 3 p.m. and is expected to end around 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23.
