Lifelong Freehold Resident Dies at 79

Services for Joyce B. Okerson will begin on Monday, April 1 at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral home.

Joyce B. Okerson, 79, of Freehold died at The Manor surrounded by her family on Wednesday, March 27. Okerson, was born and raised in Freehold Borough and was a lifelong Freehold resident. She worked at Cordts Flowers and Flowers by Jean as a Bridal Consultant, and was a member of the Pokahantus Club. Okerson, was predeceased by two brothers, James Everett Barkalow, Jr. and Forman D. Barkalow. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Charles Henry Okerson, III; one son, Charles E. Okerson and his wife, Kathy of Farmingdale; two daughters, Laurie Brinkman and her husband, Paul of Jackson and Ginny King and her husband, Michael of Brick; six grandchildren, Chas Okerson and his wife, Jennifer, Jared Okerson and his wife, Alysan, Kyle …

Old Monmouth Garden Club Member Dies at 88

Services for former Freehold resident Sara Rose (Dolly) Pizzulli will begin on Tuesday, March 12.

Sara Rose (Dolly) Pizzulli, 88, of Howell, died on Saturday, March 9 at CentraState Medical Center. She was born to the late Dominick Sammarco and Rose Crispo Sammarco on October 23, 1924, in Asbury Park, NJ and had lived in Neptune and Freehold before moving to Howell 8 years ago. Pizzulli graduated from Asbury Park High School and Newark State College. She obtained her Masters of Science in Education from Monmouth University. Pizzulli taught kindergarten at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School from 1959-1972 and First Grade at Wanamassa School from 1972 until she retired in 1994.  She was passionate about her students and always very happy when she ran into one of them in the community, never forgetting a former pupil’s name, even …

Former Freehold Resident Dies at 62

A memorial service for Elizabeth May Eckner will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home on Sunday, March 10.

Elizabeth May Eckner, 62, of Philadelphia (formerly of Freehold) passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Eckner was born in Teaneck, was raised in Ridgefield Park and had lived in Freehold, Wall, and Lakewood before moving to Philadelphia in 2007. She was a homemaker and worked as a home health aide for VNA of Central Jersey and private companion for 20 years. Eckner is survived by her son, Theodore Blado and his girlfriend, Denise Turner of Philadelphia; a sister Mary Nemec and her husband, Bill of Milford; four brothers, John Eckner and his wife, Jean of Boston, MA, James Eckner and his wife, Irene of Mandeville, LA, George Eckner and his wife, Mary of NY, and Timothy Eckner and his wife…

William Kearns, Vice President of Facilities for Silver Line Building Products, Dies at 63

Services for Kearns will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home on Wednesday, Feb. 13.

William J. “Bill” Kearns, Sr., 63, of Freehold Township died at home on Sunday, Feb. 10. Kearns was born in Red Bank and had lived in Marlboro and Howell before moving to Freehold Township in 2009. He was the Vice President of Facilities for Silver Line Building Products, now Anderson Windows in North Brunswick. Kearns was a 1972 graduate of the Newark College of Engineering (NJIT) where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Kearns was a family oriented man, enjoying golf on Sunday morning with his sons and quiet time with his grandchildren. Kearns was predeceased by his mother, Jacqueline Kearns. St.Robert Bellarmine Parishioner Dies at 86

Services for Helen M. Bayak will begin on Sunday, Feb. 10 from 2 to 6 p.m.

Helen M. Bayak, 86, of Freehold Township died on Thursday, Feb. 7 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. She was born in Allentown, PA and was a lifelong resident until moving to Freehold Township in 2007. Bayak was a resident of Surrey Downs, Freehold. Before her retirement, she was a sales associate for Zollinger’s, Hess’s and retiring from Bon-Ton department stores. Bayak was a parishioner of The Cathedral of St. Catherine of Siena in Allentown as well as St.Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church. She was a member of the Cathedral Golden Agers, the Serra Club of Allentown and a lifelong member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 29, Allentown. Thompson was a member of Siloam United Methodist Church and a civilian employee at Camp Charles Wood at Fort Monmouth.

Christina P. Thompson 92, of Freehold Township, died on Friday, Jan. 11 at The Manor, Freehold Township. Thompson was born in Smithburg and was a lifelong resident of Freehold Township. After graduating from high school, Thompson attended Rider College. She was a civilian employee at Camp Charles Wood at Fort Monmouth, a regional representative for Avon products and retired as a secretary/bookkeeper for Freehold Music Center. Thompson was a member of Siloam United Methodist Church, managing the dining room for suppers and dinner at the church and also did the printing work for the church for many years. Dr. Cheryl A. Sandor–Birnbaum, 51, of Freehold, died suddenly on Friday, Jan. 4, at CentraState Medical Center. Birnbaum was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado but was a lifelong Freehold resident. Birnbaum was a 1979 graduate of Freehold Township High School. After high school, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Muhlenberg College with a degree in chemistry and natural science, and received her DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where she was awarded the Quintessence Restorative Award and was a member of the National Dental Honor Society Omicron Kappa Upsilon. Eileen Finnegan, 69, of Freehold Township died on Friday, Jan. 4 at CentraState Medical Center. Finnegan was born, raised, and had lived in Bayonne before settling to Freehold Township. in 1982. Finnegan worked for Black Car News, Manalapan before retirement. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church.  Finnegan was predeceased by her husband, William T. Finnegan in 2004. Rotunno was a US Army Air Force Veteran during WW II serving in the Pacific Theater

Daniel R. Rotunno, Sr., 88, of Freehold Township, died on Tuesday, Dec. 18 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.  Rotunno was born and raised in Elizabeth and had lived in Union, Toms River and Barnegat before moving to Freehold Township. He was a US Army Air Force Veteran during WW II serving in the Pacific Theater. Danny retired as a deli manager for Supermarkets General/Pathmark in Elizabeth after 30 years of service in 1986. Prior to that, he was a draftsman for Allen’s Engineering Firm, Newark. Anna M. Palush Berardi, 72, of Freehold Township, formerly of Metuchen, died Sunday, Dec. 9 at CentraState Medical Center. Berardi was born in Perth Amboy and had lived in Grassflat, PA and Metuchen before moving to Freehold Township in 1995. In her early career, Berardi was a clerk for Western Union in Perth Amboy. She was later employed as a crossing guard for eleven years with the Metuchen Police Department retiring in 1995. She loved to crochet and knit, and was a member of the Deep Cut Orchid Society in Tinton Falls. Berardi’s greatest joy was having her large extended family over for picnics and parties. Traditions were very important to her and she imparted Slovak foods and holiday traditions to her family. In her memory, they will …
