The administration has made 16,800 loans since the hurricane hit New Jersey.
In just three months since Hurricane Sandy struck the East Coast, the U.S. Small Business Administration has approved more than $1.1 billion in disaster loans to residents and business owners affected by the storm. According to a release from the SBA, approximately 16,700 individuals have received loans, making Sandy the country's third largest disaster in terms of loaned dollars. Currently, Sandy sits behind 2005's Hurricane Katrina and its $10.8 billion in SBA loans, and 1994's Northridge, Calif., earthquake, which totaled $4 billion in loans. Sandy, however, could supplant those disaster totals in the long run. The SBA also announced recent emergency legislation in Congress that adds $799 million to the administration's disaster …

Governor will hold press conference in Seaside Heights Thursday to address concerns
Gov. Chris Christie will make what some believe is a "major announcement" on hurricane flood map regulations Thursday. Christie will appear at 3 p.m. at the Seaside Heights Fire Department at the Main Fire Bay at 116 Sherman Avenue in Seaside Heights. Christie chose a town that has seen the worst of the wind and flooding damage as a result of the October superstorm. But the new flooding map designs have become the biggest source of contention for long-term homeowners who are fearing that they'll either have to put their houses on stilts, or move out entirely. For instance, the Point Pleasant Boro mayor, council and Sandy-flooded residents are objecting to sections of a FEMA advisory map that puts them in a "V Zone" that calls for more …

The agency is telling residents impacted by Sandy to reach out for assistance.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency may be able to provide temporary housing or rental assistance to insured homeowners displaced by Hurricane Sandy, it reaffirmed recently, and it's urging residents in need to reach out. With many homeowners waiting for insurance checks to arrive, FEMA realizes that housing assistance may still be needed in many cases. FEMA may be able to help if any of these situations apply: Residents can register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or m.fema.gov. They can also visit a disaster recovery center, or call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362 (TTY 800-462-7585) or 711/VRS. Homeowners who are already registered with FEMA can request rental assistance if they're experiencing a delay in insurance payment, …

FEMA currently estimates 2,790 households remain in either hotels or motels throughout the state following Hurricane Sandy.
Thousands of victims of Hurricane Sandy remain temporarily housed in hotels and motels throughout the state, Federal Emergency Management Agency officials said Thursday, but the number continues to decline as families find permanent housing solutions. FEMA held a conference call late Thursday morning to announce an extension of its Transitional Sheltering Assistance as well as to provide an update of the agency’s goal to move Sandy victims away from transitional housing into more long-term temporary solutions. Currently, 2,790 households throughout New Jersey are still living in hotels and motels, FEMA Individual Assistance Branch Director Christy Grant said, though that number is expected to decline significantly by this weekend. …

The U.S. House of Representatives approved an initial round of funding for the National Flood Insurance Program. Another $50 billion could come Jan. 15.
The U.S. House of Representatives approved a measure late Friday afternoon allowing the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to borrow $9.7 billion to pay insurance claims made by victims of Hurricane Sandy. The bill, HR 41, temporarily increases the borrowing authority of FEMA to allow the agency to carry out payment claims made by property owners to the National Flood Insurance Program. Congress moved to approve the funding stop-gap Friday after concerns were raised that aid for Sandy victims had been delayed too long. The House, specifically, Majority Speaker John Boehner, R-OH, came under fire for tabling a Sandy aid package until after the New Year. Congress is expected to vote on two additional bills authorizing more than $…
