Freehold Borough Board of Education Adopts Budget with 3.76 Percent Tax Levy Increase

$32,000 was added to the budget before it was adopted for new computers and iPads for specific staff. Tax levy increase from last year is three-and-a-half cents from last year.

The Freehold Borough Board of Education (BOE) adopted their 2013-2014 school year budget on Monday night, but not before a last minute added expense. Approximately $32,000 was added to the budget following a motion to give selected staff members new computers and iPads. “It is an additional $8 to $11 per household, which works out to be three cents a day for the year [to get the new computers and iPads],” explained BOE member Susan Grietz. “I think it would be penny foolish not to because I also sit in front of a computer all day for work and I agree that when they crash it is a terrible waste of time and money. We can’t support our teachers with pay increases but we can support them with the proper technology. While three board members …

The technology mandates that are coming down the pike with the state's push for the Common Core are going to cost a fortune. When the standardized tests that are supposed to measure the outcomes of CC adoption are implemented, tech and test prep companies alike stand to make a fortune off of NJ schools. Imagine a class of 27 1st graders all sitting in front of computers taking standardized tests …   more ›

Freehold Borough BOE Adopts Tentative Budget

Tentative budget proposes a net tax levy increase of 3.67-percent, which allows Borough Schools to hire a fourth grade teacher and purchase computers.

After numerous meetings and number crunching, the Freehold Borough BOE has adopted their tentative budget for the 2013-2014 school year.  A presentation given by Freehold Borough Interim Business Administrator Jim Strimple filled in the gaps previously left from unknown state aid figures. On Friday, March 1, state aid numbers were provided to school districts and Freehold Borough learned that their state aid would increase this year. While the state aid increase helped borough schools, it alone was not enough to allow schools to implement needed staff and materials without an increase in the tax levy. “The tax levy is four-percent but with the additional funds we are able to give back about $89,000 in debit relief to borough residents so …

Freehold Borough Plans to Adopt Tentative Budget

The Freehold Borough Board of Education (BOE) will take state funding numbers into consideration before adopting tentative budget Monday, March 4.

The Freehold Borough Board of Education (BOE) plans to adopt their tentative 2013-2014 school year budget on Monday, March 4. Last week, New Jersey state funding numbers were released, giving school districts a more accurate picture of what next year's budget will look like. From those numbers, Freehold Borough schools learned that they would be receiving more aid than last year. According to a press release from Monmouth County Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande, the news from the Christie Administration about additional funding coming to 11th district schools was well received. “I have been battling for Districts like Freehold Borough and Red Bank that has seen increased enrollment but were funded more than 30-percent below the State’s …

Freehold Borough BOE Further Examines 2013-2014 Budget

The Freehold Borough Board of Education (BOE) further examined the 2013-2014 school year budget with additional information from the last meeting.

Freehold Borough residents and organizations gathered in the Park Avenue Elementary Complex cafeteria Monday night, to see how the Board of Education (BOE) was going to proceed with the 2013-2014 school budget. Following the Feb. 11 preliminary budget presentation, Jim Strimple, Freehold Borough Schools interim business administrator, came back to the BOE on Monday, Feb. 25 with additional information to consider.  “When we had our last meeting, the board directed the administration to look at two budget scenarios. First, if there were a four-percent increase in tax levy, what would the ramifications be? And if there was an eight-percent increase in the tax levy, what ramifications or implications would that have on the educational …

Preliminary Budget Puts Freehold Borough BOE 'Between Rock and Hard Place’

Before state-aid figures, Freehold Borough Schools are $565,765 over the cap. The board is asking for public to weigh in at the next meeting about whether they would rather have larger classrooms or see an increase in taxes.

The Freehold Borough Board of Education (BOE) will have to decide between increasing classroom size or increasing taxes after hearing a presentation on the preliminary 2013-2014 school year budget.  At Monday night’s BOE meeting, Jim Strimple, interim business administrator for the school district, walked the board through the projected appropriations and revenues for the 2013-2014 school year. The projected numbers did not include state aid numbers. Those numbers will be available later in February. “The governor is not giving his budget address until Tuesday, Feb. 26,” said Strimple. “Two days later we will find out what our state aid will be in 2013-2014.” According to Strimple, the projected revenues for borough schools are $19,075,426…

It is obvious to me in reading the comments that the question isn't where were the school administrators were but where were these concerned citizens back then? If they had any understanding of the schools they would know the budget crises is not a sudden thing nor would they be deciding that it has to be "illegal" children. The influx is immigrants' children, who mostly have been born here in …   more ›
